It’s Officially Fall!

As y’all know by now, even though our values are more aligned with Southern Traditions, 2 of us still live in Pennsylvania, and here in Pennsylvania we are fortunate to have a number of orchards that offer a variety of produce. Many of these orchards also host activities that extend the fun beyond apple and pumpkin picking. You and the family can enjoy hayrides, bonfires, train rides, petting zoos, moon bounces, live music and even beer gardens or wine tastings. What makes these activities just as great as our beloved summer pastimes is that you are able to enjoy some outdoor entertainment without the sweltering heat. Let’s jump right in to all that Linvilla Orchards has to offer!

1. Apple Picking

Apple picking was a complete blast as Linvilla offers close to 25 different varieties. The 20-acre orchard is open year-round and also offers flowers and other produce varieties for the picking such as apricots, cherries, nectarines, peaches, grapes, pears, peppers, pumpkins, corn, tomatoes, eggplants, rhubarb, plums and many different types of berries. You can even fish at the orchard’s lake!

Tip: Since we knew we would be baking some pies later in the week, another fun activity to do as a family, we planned ahead and cleared out plenty of space in our refrigerator to be sure we had enough room to hold the apples.

2. Barnyard Fun

An absolute hit, for sure, was the barnyard which featured white tailed deer, friendly calves, charismatic goats, gentle horses, whimsical sheep and am adorable pot-bellied pig - each with their own unique lovable personalities. They also had chickens, geese, pheasants, quail, doves, ducks, peacocks, guineas and an energetic emu that could keep you entertained for hours!

Tip: Make sure to bring hand sanitizer for after petting all of your new furry friends.

3. Hayrides

Hayrides are a favorite fall activity that everyone can enjoy and range from country-side or farm views to haunted. However, in Pennsylvania, we recently have been swamped with rain and the grounds were heavily saturated during our visit. Luckily, the property had limited rides going and we were still able to experience this fun activity. Linvilla’s Daytime Harvest Hayrides take you on a 15 to 20-minute trip through their scenic fields and orchards. They typically run more frequently than what we experienced, weather permitting.

Tip: We would suggest that you call ahead to your local farm or orchard to make sure they are running rides.

4. Face Painting, Train + Pony Rides

This was such a fun experience! I mean who doesn’t like riding around on an antique train, sitting back and relaxing while the cool autumn breeze runs through your locs? Pony rides can also be very enjoyable, even for younger children, as they are always monitored, but still let the kids feel like they are in control. Another success was the face painting.

Tip: Make this experience more fun by getting in on the action too. Nothing says, “Yes, we’re a family unit!” like matching face paintings.

5. Food + Snacks

So this seemed to be the adults’ favorite part of the day. To pair with your apple cider or other drinks, Linvilla had some seasonal faves and plenty of yummy goodies like apple cider donuts, soft pretzels, burgers, hot dogs, grilled cheese sandwiches, chicken nuggets, fries, cheese fries, chili fries, chili cheese fries (ok we’re sure you get that we love fries), and more! These warm vittles are a great way to end the day or even break in between activities.

6. Beer + wine

It may shock you, as it did us, to find out that many orchards host beer and wine tastings on their properties. New to Linvilla Orchards this fall, the beer garden, hosted by Ship Bottom Brewery, is available on the weekends! That's right, Linvilla Orchards will host a Ship Bottom Brewery beer garden on Saturdays and Sundays. The garden opens at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 22nd and will be open every weekend from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Overall, the trip to the orchard was an eventful day, and can be great option for some fall family fun (especially if you’re a parent to the four and under crowd), a great play date, or even as an adults’ day/night out (of course, depending on your local offerings).
