the modern belle's guide to home organization

organization tips for the modern woman on the go

Having a clean home is one thing, but having an organized household is the real goal. Your home should be the central foundation for you and your family, and when everything has its place, it makes life much easier. Having trouble figuring out where to start? Here are a few tips that you can start using today!

1. It's as Simple as Storage

Here's a thought; a library is always neat simply because the books are placed on shelves. Could you even imagine a library without shelving? Well, the same idea can be carried into your own home. The more storage you own, the neater your house will appear.

Tip: check out places like The Container Store or IKEA. You'll be pleasantly surprised at how many creative items there are that can help organize any space - and the prices are not too bad either!

2. Going Incognito

Household items that can serve double duty are absolutely awesome. Having hiding places for small things, but still being able to utilize the storage is a great exchange to the typical plastic bins and containers.

Tip: Hutches, ottomans, & small seating cushions are really awesome furniture items that have storage options available.  Even try some pieces that can be disguised as home decor.

3. Tidy Those Drawers

The inside of your drawers can become much more functionally sound by adding things like spacers or small containers.  Drawer inserts can quickly add organization by holding many of a single small object to separating larger tools. There is something so peaceful about opening a drawer that is very well compartmentalized.

Tip: Try expanding your new found love of organization to your sock & underweaar drawers - because we all know how unruly that drawer can become.

4. Where Labels are ALWAYS Appropriate

Labels may not be welcomed in many areas of your modern life, but they are definitely welcome in home organization. Labeling your storage is an easy way to maintain organization and allows everyone in your household to be able to keep the home looking great. Labels provide a simple way to assist your not-so-organized housemates, guests, or family members know exactly where specific items belong.

Tip: Keeping labels consistent throughout the house will not only help with organization, it will also make your house appear more cohesive and purposefully styled.  Invest in a label gun, chalkboard paint and stencils, canvas, or even cute tags like in the picture above.

5. Tame that Clutter!

In our current era, where everything seems to be digital, paper still seems to somehow sneak in and takeover. It doesn't help that paper is one of the easiest things to get out of control and become overbearing quickly either. By having items like small woven baskets or magazine filers for your newspapers, magazines and file folders, you can keep loose leaf mess to a minimum.

Tip: Have a separate place for "junk" papers.  Set aside a day and time to go through them at least once a week to keep unwanted items hanging around the house.

6. Behind Closed Doors...

Anything goes when it's behind a closed door - well not anything but you get it. Linen closets, bedroom closets, pantries, cabinets, etc. are some of the best organization tools that come with your home. You can easily turn these areas into much more functional spaces by adding extra racks, shelves, bins, etc.

Tip: If you own your home, don't be scared to add a extra closet or 2, maybe 3. If your home seems to lack storage, adding it in hidden "wasted spaces" - like underneath stair cases as shown above - will give you the storage you need for better organization, as well as boost your resell value!

7. Less is More

And last, but not least :: when in doubt, go for less! The more you have, the more you have to manage and maintain. It will force you to overdo storage, and you want to create organization but keep your house looking like a home - not a big box store.  Sometimes the best way to stay organized is by keeping what's necessary, and not much more.

Tip: The term "minimalize" is being thrown around like confetti these days.  Do a simple search on the web to see more tips on how to de-clutter your home life.
