Tips to Keep Our Magic
*because we all know you can't pour from an empty cup*

Self-care refers to activities that you do to reduce stress, connect spiritually, or proactively working towards your general well-being, and neglecting self-care can lead to breakdowns in your mental and physical health. This energy is not only damaging to yourself, but it is easily transferable to all those around you. So sis, this is your guide to ensure that you keep your melanin poppin’ at an optimum level ✨The MMB's have got you - Mind, Body & Spirit.

sis - you are a unicorn 🦄

Since the dawn of time, women have been know to meet the needs of everyone else in our lives (our children, our significant others, family members...even our bosses) before taking care of ourselves. Perhaps it is a learned behavior, and, in many cases, what is expected of us, but why do we feel it's okay to put our needs on hold?  We are living in #blackgirlmagic era; we are graduating from college, building business and brands, and slaying  9 to 5's.

Yet, on the flip side we are also living with daily instances of racial tension and political ambiguity, work/school deadlines, family obligations (especially for all the moms out there). It is, without a doubt, too easy to put self-care on the back burner, or forget about it entirely.  Let's dive right in to our tips to get you started on your own self-care movement!

1. jot it down ✍

I know many of us feel that pesky guilt whispering in our ear when trying to practice self care, especially if it’s taking away time from family and or friends. Well this tip is a fairly simple and easy way to start you on your self-care journey; it doesn’t take much time and you don’t have leave the confines of your home.

Our suggestion: Buy a cute journal and start writing!  Remember not to beat yourself up if you don't consider yourself to be a master wordsmith.  You can write about your day, or simple notes to yourself reminding you why your are amazing, or any thoughts that come to mind.

2. prayer + meditation 🙏

Ever find yourself saying, "...but I don't have time for..."?  Well, this tip is especially for you.  If you are constantly busy with work, motherhood, or just the daily grind, mediation and prayer are fantastic ways to get centered and regroup.  It's true what they say about always finding time for what's important; I’ve been known to say a prayer at my desk or even meditate in my car during lunch.
Our suggestion: Again, it can be a simple prayer. You don’t have to have a full monologue, just focus on what you need to get grounded.

3. read SOMETHING

This third tip is a personal favorite.  Reading has so many benefits that contribute to self-care, but if you find yourself having trouble setting aside "alone" time, pick up a good read!  I have found that once you jump into some literature that you find fascinating, you will continue to find time to in order to keep reading.  Because of this, reading is a awesome way to smoothly introduce personal time into your hectic schedule.  Heck, maybe down the road you'll even find time for some of that meditation we suggested earlier *cough*👆*cough*
Our suggestion: Don't know where to start? Ask friends and co-workers what they're reading, join an e-book club, or simply head to your closest book store and simply ask for some suggestions based on your preferences.

4. bubbles + bubbly

Instead of just rushing and taking a shower, pour yourself a glass of your favorite wine or champagne, grab a bath bomb, light a candle, and enjoy some soothing soaking time.

This can also be a great time to catch up in some reading, whether it’s the latest bestseller, a magazine, your favorite blog *wink wink*, this is a perfect time to kill two birds with one stone.

5. rock it out 🎧

Music is such an excellent therapeutic measurement. Whether it's during a breakup or a celebration, music makes everything better. There are some great playlist on spotify that are mood appropriate. One of our faves is the Black Girl Magic playlist; it’s a surefire way to hype you up. I mean whose mood doesn't automatically shift the moment you hear "...I’m living my best life..." or "...KeKe, do you love me? Are we riding?"

6. hydrate + exercise

As you may have noticed, all of the previous tips mainly focus on getting your mind right.  Mental health is so very important, but so is your physical health.  Adding as little as 30 minutes a day of basic exercise (and we mean basic, like walking...you can walk), has so many mental and physical benefits that it's hard not to add it to your routine.  Drinking water is the same.  Getting your daily dose of water may seem daunting for some, but once you notice the physical changes (like naturally glowing skin), water will be your next addiction.
Our suggestion: Don't forget to grab the shea butter, coconut oil, or whatever you use to keep your skin hydrated! Lather in it, bathe in it, just bask in it, because when your skin is looking and feelin’ good, your spirits will be glowing too!

7. fellowship with friends + family

Find AND nurture your tribe y'all! This is your group that you can use as your personal sounding board, religious/spiritual gurus, therapists, babysitters, just your go to people. The black woman is a unique creature with enough external systems in place to break us down every day.  This makes it so important that we are selective about who we surround ourselves with, and we MUST do what is necessary by returning the favor and uplifting each other.  Remember, no relationship can survive if it isn't balanced.
Our suggestion: Set a monthly date with your crew to get mani/pedi's, go wine tasting, do brunch dates, or take a mini vacay... speaking of vacay...

8. take a break 🌴

We all have those vacation days, personal days, sick/mental health days, or holiday time that we've made no plans but to sit around the house.  Although this is not terrible, sometimes you still need to get away from the same ol' same.  Try to purposefully plan vacations (long or short) to ensure you actually get a break from your typical routine.

Our suggestion: Take a girls trip somewhere local, or pack up the family and head out of town for the weekend :: we're sure you can find some good tips right here on The Modern Black Belle 💁‍♀️

Bottom line is self care is not an option it’s MANDATORY :: Treat yo’self QUEEN 👑
